Deepal S. Eliatamby, P.E., SCCED, appointed by Governor Haley to the SC Local Government Competitiveness Council.

Eliatamby Tapped for Local Government Competitiveness Council

March 2, 2016

COLUMBIA, SC — March 2, 2016 — By executive order, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has announced the formation of a Local Government Competitiveness Council. The Council’s function will be to analyze factors that influence local governments’ attraction, retention and development of business and industry.

The council, chaired by South Carolina Department of Revenue Director Rick Reames and made up of small groups of business leaders from around the state, will evaluate local governments based on three general categories: Public Infrastructure; Taxes Business and Industry, and Regulation; and Workforce Readiness.

Each group is comprised of individuals with proven expertise and leadership in his or her respective category. Deepal S. Eliatamby, P.E., SCCED, President of Alliance Consulting Engineers, Inc., has been appointed by Governor Haley to the Public Infrastructure group. Eliatamby will serve alongside fellow Public Infrastructure group appointees Keller Kissam, Senior VP at SCANA Corporation, and Bob Hughes of Hughes Development Corporation.

“We are very excited about this Competitiveness Council, and they’re going to start getting to work right away,” said Gov. Nikki Haley. “What we really hope our end goal is that once we come out with this report and we talk to the counties about it, when they go to decide something for that county, they will know whether they need to vote for that extra fee and whether they should be increasing taxes or decreasing taxes … They will have a toolkit to let them know how to improve in their county, and not only that, the people will have that toolkit on whether they’re making decisions to move that county forward or backward.”

“Great progress has been made in South Carolina’s economic development over the past several years,” said Eliatamby. “And we are proud that Alliance Consulting Engineers, Inc., has had a role in many of the projects that have provided jobs and advanced economic prosperity in our state. Working recently with companies like Amazon.com, BMW, Continental Tire, Giti Tire, Kobelco, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Nexans, Toray Carbon Fibers and more, we have seen tremendous growth in manufacturing and investment in South Carolina. Now to be given the opportunity to serve on the Local Government Competitiveness Council and help develop strategies that ensure all of our South Carolina counties have a blueprint for economic development success is an honor and a true privilege.”
